Local SEO basics: how to get your Miami business found on Google

A practical guide to the steps any Miami business owner can take to show up in local search results — no agency required.

When someone in Miami searches for 'plumber near me' or 'Cuban restaurant in Hialeah,' Google shows them a map with local results at the top of the page. Getting your business into those results — and into the regular search results below them — is what local SEO is about.

The good news: local SEO is one of the areas where a small business can actually compete with larger companies without a massive budget. Here's how to start.

Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single most important thing you can do for local search visibility, and it's completely free. Go to business.google.com and claim your listing (or create one if you don't have one).

Fill out every field: business name, address, phone number, hours, website, category, and description. Add real photos — the exterior of your location, your team, your work, your products. Businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks.

Your Google Business Profile is what powers the 'local pack' — the map results that appear when someone searches for businesses in their area. If you're not on there, you're invisible for those searches.

Step 2: Keep your business information consistent everywhere

Google checks your business name, address, and phone number (called NAP) across dozens of websites — Yelp, Yellow Pages, Facebook, Apple Maps, and others. When your information is inconsistent across these platforms, it hurts your local rankings.

Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are exactly the same on every platform. Even small differences (like 'St.' vs 'Street') can cause problems.

The main platforms to update in Miami: Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and your website's contact page and footer.

Step 3: Get more Google reviews — and respond to them

Reviews are one of the most powerful local ranking factors. Businesses with more recent, positive reviews consistently outrank those without them.

The simplest way to get reviews: ask. Most satisfied customers don't leave reviews because they forget or don't know where to go. Create a direct link to your Google review form and text or email it to customers after they've had a good experience.

Always respond to reviews — both positive and negative. A thoughtful response to a negative review often matters more to prospective customers than the review itself. It shows you're paying attention and you care.

Step 4: Optimize your website for local keywords

Your website needs to clearly tell Google where you are and what you do. This means using location-specific language naturally throughout your content — not stuffing keywords, but writing the way a real person in Miami would describe your business.

Include your city and neighborhood in your page titles, headings, and descriptions. If you serve multiple areas, consider creating separate pages for each one. A page titled 'Web Design Services in Coral Gables' will rank for Coral Gables searches much better than a generic services page.

Make sure your address and phone number appear on your website — ideally in the footer of every page and on your contact page. This reinforces your location signals for Google.

Step 5: Get your website right

Google considers several technical factors when ranking local businesses: page load speed, mobile friendliness, and whether your site has an SSL certificate (the padlock in the browser bar).

Over 60% of local searches happen on mobile devices. If your site isn't fast and easy to use on a phone, Google will rank it lower and visitors will leave. Test your site at pagespeed.web.dev and take any failing items seriously.

Local SEO is not a one-time task — it's an ongoing effort. But the steps above will get you significantly further than most of your local competitors, most of whom haven't done any of this deliberately.
