A lot of small business owners in Miami run their entire online presence through Instagram. And honestly, I get it — it's free, it's easy, you can post from your phone, and a lot of customers are on there. But relying on Instagram alone is one of the riskiest things you can do for your business's digital future.
Here's the thing nobody in your Instagram feed is going to tell you: you don't own any of it.
Social media is rented land
When you build your audience on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok, you're building on someone else's platform. They control the algorithm. They decide who sees your posts. They can change the rules at any moment — and they do, constantly.
In 2012, Facebook pages were a goldmine for small businesses. Organic posts would reach most of your followers. Then Facebook changed the algorithm, and reach dropped to 2–5% overnight. Businesses that had built their entire strategy around Facebook were suddenly invisible.
Beyond algorithm changes, platforms can suspend your account for violating policies — sometimes by mistake, sometimes without clear explanation. When that happens to your Instagram, you lose everything: your followers, your posts, your content. And there's no customer service number to call.
A website is different. You own it. No algorithm decides who sees it. No platform can take it away.
Google search vs. Instagram discovery
Think about how your customers actually find you. Some of them follow you on Instagram and discover your business through a friend's post — that's great. But what about the person who just moved to Miami and searches 'best Cuban restaurant in Little Havana' or 'electrician near me in Doral'?
That search happens on Google. And Instagram doesn't appear in Google search results. Your website does.
Local search is incredibly powerful for small businesses. When someone is searching for what you offer in your area, they have high intent — they're ready to buy or hire. A website that shows up in those searches is your best-performing salesperson, working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at no additional cost.
Credibility and first impressions
Before a potential client calls you, books with you, or walks into your business, they're going to look you up online. Studies consistently show that 75% of people judge a company's credibility based on their website design.
An Instagram page — even a great one — doesn't convey the same level of professionalism as a well-built website. It signals that you're active on social media, not that you're an established, trustworthy business. If a competitor has a solid website and you don't, they win that first impression every time.
You own your customer data
A website lets you collect email addresses, track which pages people visit, and understand what your customers care about. Instagram gives you engagement metrics and follower counts — data that lives on their platform, not yours.
When you have your customers' email addresses and can communicate with them directly, you're not at the mercy of an algorithm. An email list you own is worth more than any number of Instagram followers.
Instagram and a website work together
None of this is an argument against using Instagram. It's a great tool for building community, showing personality, and staying top of mind with your existing audience. Use it — but use it as part of a bigger strategy, not as your entire strategy.
The smart approach is to use Instagram to drive traffic to your website, and your website to convert that traffic into customers and collect their contact information. That way you own the relationship, not the platform.
If your business doesn't have a proper website yet, now is the time. The longer you wait, the more ground you're giving to competitors who figured this out already.
